The Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team mounted a comeback but came up short in a 3-2 loss at Hawkeye (Iowa) on Friday afternoon.

The Red Tails opened up a 2-0 lead in the opening 25 minutes before the Chargers (0-2) got on the board in the 26th minute as Mike Pavon (Galveston, Texas/Willis) scored an unassisted goal, his second of the season.

Hawkeye quickly regained its two-goal advantage as William Alvarez scored in the 29th minute. The Chargers made it a 3-2 game as Grego Massengo (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) tallied an unassisted goal in the 38th minute.

It stayed that way the rest of the contest, however, as the Chargers were unable to put in the equalizer despite outshooting Hawkeye 8-2 in the second half and 10-7 for the match.

Sandburg keeper Saahil Kapoor (Guilford, England/Guilford County) made four saves in net for the Chargers.

The Chargers next action is 4 p.m. Tuesday at Prairie State in their first Region IV match.
